Optimizing intensive culture protocols for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) larvae

چکیده
Abstract Larval cod require live prey as food, and concentration (PC) feeding frequency (FF) often affect their growth survival. Apart from this, water exchange rates/water flow (WER/WF) current (WC) also the resident time in tank larval/early juvenile behaviour, respectively. High is known to induce stress finfish larvae, this response believed be dependent on larval developmental stage. Thus, we conducted a study evaluate three rearing protocols varying concentration, frequency, current/exchange rate. Three were used: low (PC), (FF), (protocol 1); medium PC, FF, WF 2); high 3) (see Table 1). Larvae sampled periodically for cortisol measurements. Cortisol extraction radioimmunoassay (RIA) using methods previously validated larvae. reared 2 3 significantly bigger heavier than larvae protocol 1. Rearing had significant effect level cod. showed stage-dependent response. Protocol higher survival 1 3. Our results indicate that an intermediate 2) suitable during rearing.

Iodine nutrition and toxicity in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) larvae
Copepods as feed promote better growth and development in marine fish larvae than rotifers. However, unlike rotifers, copepods contain several minerals such as iodine (I), at potentially toxic levels. Iodine is an essential trace element and both under and over supply of I can inhibit the production of the I containing thyroid hormones. It is unknown whether marine fish larvae require copepod l...
متن کاملCannibalism of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua larvae and juveniles on first-week larvae
Cannibalism in Atlantic cod Gadus morhua is widespread under both field and culture conditions, but no studies have been conducted on the behavioural ontogeny of cannibalism in this species. We carried out an experiment to investigate the onset and ontogenetic changes in cannibalistic behaviour of Atlantic cod during early developmental stages. Cod larvae were separated into 4 size classes (6, ...
متن کاملExophiala angulospora causes systemic inflammation in atlantic cod Gadus morhua.
Species of Exophiala are opportunistic fungal pathogens that may infect a broad range of warm- and cold-blooded animals, including salmonids and Atlantic cod. In the present study, we observed abnormal swimming behaviour and skin pigmentation and increased mortality in cod kept in an indoor tank. Necropsy revealed foci of different sizes with a greyish to brownish colour in internal organs of d...
متن کاملAuthentication of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) using real time PCR.
This work describes the development of a real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) system for the detection and identification of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). Among the advantages of this technique, it is worth highlighting that this is reliable in terms of specificity and sensitivity. The TaqMan real-time PCR is the simplest, fastest testing process and has the highest potential for automat...
متن کاملReconstructed 3D models of digestive organs of developing Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) larvae
Six 3D models of the digestive system during ontogeny were reconstructed from histological sections of Atlantic cod larvae. The 3D models clearly visualize the following features: folding of the gut rotation; subdivision of digestive tract into foregut, midgut, and hindgut by sphincters; development of stomach and pyloric caeca from 39 dph; location of entrances of bile and pancreatic ducts in ...
